From June 17-July 27, 2019, I was fortunate enough to have been offered a full tuition scholarship for Level 8 in Houston Ballet Academy’s six-week summer intensive program. Additionally, I was also awarded a full housing scholarship, which I am very grateful for.

Throughout the six-week summer intensive, I had a chance to

work with various teachers such as, Chris Wright (Rambert School), Claudio Munoz (Houston Ballet Academy), Harper Watters (Houston Ballet), Ilya Kozadeyev (UNCSA) and Chris Coomer (Houston Ballet).

During the summer intensive, I was able to experience many genres of dance such as Ballroom, Jazz, Modern technique as well as folk dance. This enabled me to broaden my capabilities and be able to have a taste of other styles of dance instead of just Ballet, which is extremely helpful in the dance world now today as companies no longer just do classical repertoire. Additional to dance classes, the summer intensive also offered helpful talks and classes to help with conditioning our body the right way. One of these classes was Yamuna body rolling taught by Akihiro Kawasaki. TO me, my body is my instrument in ballet and thus, I need to take as much care as possible to ensure a lengthy career. Therefore, I found Akihiro’s class very helpful and enjoyable, as it helps release muscle tension, as well as help me warm up for the day.

During the fourth to sixth week of the intensive, I was fortunate enough to be selected to take part in The 2019 AFA Summer Music Festival, which was a program where several of my level 8 classmates would have the chance to choreograph a piece to music composed by young composers. I was involved in a “Jubilant Click”, choreographed by Lauren Bemisderfer. I very much enjoyed every minute of the process as it was a first-time experience for me, and I found it to be a learning process not just as a dancer in the piece but also being able to work together to create ideas. The AFA gave me a chance to have a little insight to what company life would be like, having to work with choreographers and musicians, giving me valuable experience for the future. In the end the whole experience was extremely rewarding as we got to perform the piece during our end of summer intensive showcase which gathered good reviews!

Overall, this was a dream come true as I was able to learn from one of the best schools in the world and work with many teachers that made me improve beyond my imagination. Once again, I would like to sincerely thank Mr Richard Bowman and the Alana Haines Australasian Awards for providing me with the opportunity to be apart of this unforgettable experience!
