ARAD Grad Dip Ed - Director, The Royal Ballet School
Gailene had a 16-year performance career before becoming a ballet director. Born in Australia, she ran the world-renowned school, in Covent Garden, for 15 years. Gailene supported AHA Awards as head judge since the very first event in 1991 while she was director of the Australian Ballet School. Later as Director of the Royal Ballet School she continued her support up until April 2013 when she passed away with an aggressive brain tumour. Gailene was head judge of the YAGP & other international Awards & is very sadly missed by all.

APRA LICENCE
AHA Awards is affiliated to the Performing Arts Competition Assn of New Zealand (PACNZ) AHA Awards complies with APRA regulations & forward fees on behalf of all Competitors
Judging
The jury evaluates candidate’s potential based on: technique, musicality & physical suitability. Scholarship allocation is based on candidates suitability for that school & so a Semi or Quarter Finalist may receive a scholarship over a Finalist. The Jury will observe and mark the competitors Adjudicated classes on a semi-private stage, and Preliminary Set Solos and Own Choice items (for Supreme A & B categories) on a public stage.
2019 CONTEST FORMAT
Note: Age group has changed for 2019 event because there are higher entry numbers in A Group
Age as at first day of competition (April 18th 2019)
Juniors = 1 set solo (11-12yrs inclusive)
Supreme A = 2 contrasting solos (13-14yrs inclusive)
Supreme B = 2 contrasting solos (15-18yrs inclusive)
Contestants' solos are judged in four rounds: Preliminaries, Quarter-Finals, Semi-finals & Finals
Contestants Present: (Contestants perform in order of age)
No eliminations until Classes & Preliminaries are completed
1) An adjudicated classical class (no eliminations) on Stage (no pointe or barre)
2) One ‘Set’ Solo chosen from the professional classical repertoire list below
3) One ‘Own Choice’ Contrasting Solo (excludes Junior Scholars)
One ‘Own Choice’ (excludes Juniors) Original choreography (copyright law) in contrasting dance style (contemporary or neo/lyrical) Either barefoot, flats or pointe shoes. This solo must not exceed 1.45 min max. Own Choice music may include lyrics if you wish
Classes
Adjudicated classes on stage Thursday
Juniors from 8.30am, A Group Afternoon,, B Group Evening
The classes are part of the contest & if a contestant does not attend the class they will not be able to perform their solos in the competition. All classes take place at the venue and are 1/2 hr each, comprising of 4 short enchainment’s (no barre or pointe work). Dance Studio Directors and Teachers may view Adjudicated classes in which they have students – Parents/Caregivers may not view these classes
1) P.d bras & Adage 2) Tendus, G. Batt, Pirouettes 3) Petit Allegro 4) G. Allegro. There are no eliminations following classes however the scores from these sessions will count towards the final results.
Class attire:
Females: Black or dark colour leotard, pink tights, flats
Males: white leotard & black tights or black unitard, flats
Preliminaries: Friday, Saturday, Sunday - Junior & Supreme groups Both solos for A&B
Quarter-Finals: 44-50 each from Juniors & Supreme A & B group combined Set Solo only A&B
Semi-Finals: 22 each from Juniors & Supreme A & B combined Set Solo only A&B
Finals: Monday evening 11 each from Juniors & Supreme A & B combined with a minimum of 3 from either A or B group - BOTH solos A&B
Audience Ballot Voting: The audience gets to choose via ballot vote for their choice in each section Junior, A & B groups during Quarter-Finals on Monday. Audience voting is completely separate to judges’ selection & is common practice in all international competitions.
SET SOLO VERSIONS
Please note that the you-tubes are only examples of ONE version. Various solo versions from well known companies are accepted. Adaptions can be made to suit candidates' capabilities (especially juniors) including changing sides for turns but the original choreography should be unchanged if possible.
All solos: Prompt entry/exit - no bow/curtsey. Only small hand-held props used artistically are permitted (fan, tambourine etc) for own choice solo. If you have ribbons on tambourine please sew them so they do not fall off. Do NOT leave ANY items on stage as you exit. Only at the Finals - contestants should curtsey/bow at end of their dance.

MUSIC
NO CD's will be posted. When competitors have registered, they will have access on registration site to ALL set solo music - at the top bar click on MUSIC. Competitors can download any or all solos with unlimited access & make a CDs for themselves & tutors.
No alternative music for set solos will be accepted. Contestants MUST perform to the music we provide.
OWN CHOICE: Contestants will also need to Upload their named Ówn Choice' Music as an MP3 on your entry page (1.45min max). Music for this item must be uploaded to enter because of the way the entry system is set up so you can upload any MP3 music file & replace it later against your online Registration by March 12th 2019 latest for sound tech. Please use contestant name to name this music file on your computer prior to uploading onto your entry site.
Making your Own Choice music File: The Easiest way is to upload your music into I-tunes or drop box - copy & paste the music onto your desk top. This automatically makes an MP3 music file. If you don't have I-tunes already just download the free app
Back up Music for Own Choice: It is highly unlikely that you will need a spare source of your Own Choice music but you should keep one on you in case. Please make sure that there is only ONE track on your named CD or USB back up source.
