Being a part of the Alana Haines Awards 2019 was such an unforgettable experience. It was the first major international ballet competition I have ever done and introduced me to the hard, outer world of dance. Performing my variation, blue bird on the huge stage was like a dream.

I am so thankful for Patricia Barker for noticing me in class and in my dances. I was offered an internship to the Royal New Zealand Ballet along with a few others. The internship lasted 4 days in early July.

It was the craziest experience! The internship included class with the company, learning George Balanchine’s Serenade with the company girls, learning how to properly prepare your pointe shoes and figuring out what works best for you, ‘melt’ which was a body maintenance class which felt so good and learning ‘stand to reason’, a very interesting, complicated contemporary piece.

Being shy, I was vey nervous coming to a foreign country to dance. But the company members and the staff were so welcoming and made me feel comfortable to dance with all the amazing ballerinas.

In just 4 days I experienced what it is like to work in a ballet company and enjoyed every second of it. That was definitely the most spectacular 4 days of my life! I now know how much harder I must work to be a professional ballerina.

Thank you to the AHA family for giving me this special opportunity.
