AHA Awards Supreme Semi Finalist 2019
Rosella Hightower Summer Intensive

In August I travelled to Cannes, France to attend École supérieure de danse de Cannes Rosella Hightower summer school, which ran for 8 full days. I won this scholarship after making the semi-finals at the AHA Awards.
I absolutely loved attending this summer school, the schedule was demanding but fun and the teachers were very knowledgeable and experienced. I also made so many amazing and talented friends. I was the only person whose first language was English, with most of the students who attended this summer school from France and other parts of Europe. It made it a bit hard to communicate at first, but dance was the universal language we could understand.
Life in the boarding house was very fun. I shared a room and bathroom with one other girl. There was a lot of freedom as you could go out of the school with a friend, walk around campus and go to meals freely (although the canteen food wasn’t great). We also had one trip to the night markets with all the people in the boarding house.
My timetable included, a warm up class (floor barre and Pilates), classical class, variation/pointe class, jazz class (which was more like Australian contemporary/modern) and contemporary class. On the first day we had a classical class by age where we were assessed, and then we were then put into classes based on ability. I was put in the ‘superior intensive’. All our classes were in French which made it a bit confusing, sometimes the teacher would translate but usually not – as a result I learnt many French words very quickly! My favourite teacher was the classical teacher, JS Colau a former principal of the Paris Opera Ballet.
Overall, I loved this experience and would definitely recommend this school and would love to go back. Thank you to Alana Haines Australasian Awards for providing me with this incredible opportunity. It allowed me to see ballet from another perspective at such a young age.
